Show Descriptions

We often hear that people are at their best when times get tough.  Lucky for us that's not the case with the Turpin family!  When the beleaguered Turpins gather to bury their equally beloved and reviled patriarch, the consequences of all that "togetherness," and the misguided comfort offered by their decidedly peculiar friends and neighbors, are alternately hilarious and touching.

Character Descriptions
Bud Turpin:   This is a pivotal role in the play, appearing only in the first act.  It is a non-speaking role.  (Age: 65+)

Raynelle Turpin:   Raynelle is Bud’s long-suffering wife, a real Southern lady – genteel – with a heart of gold and corset of steel.  (Age: 60-ish)

Ray-Bud Turpin:   Ray-Bud is Raynelle's older son who tries to take on the role of the man-of-the-family, but isn't ready for the responsibility.  He is slightly overwhelmed by it all and is happier just living on a daily basis.  (Age: 40-50)

Lucille:   Lucille is Ray-Bud's wife.  She feels like a failure because she can't have what she really wants – children.  Lucille is a quiet, gentle woman like her mother-in-law.  (Age: 30-40)

Junior Turpin:   Raynelle's younger son, a dreamer and schemer who never is the success he wants to be for his Daddy.  (Age: 30-40)

Suzanne:   Suzanne is Junior's wife.  She is a vocal, emotional woman who is quick to point out Junior's failures in life.  (She should have a good singing voice, but her range is not important.)  (Age: 25-35)

Marguerite:   Bud's sister, Marguerite is a holier-than-thou character out to evangelize the world.  She is pushy and opinionated.  (Please try not to repeat Vicki Lawrence's character of Mama.)  (Age: 50-60)

Royce:   Marguerite's son, his only ambition in life is to live off welfare.  He is not the same since he lost his job at the sewage plant.  His mother is always on his back.  (Age: 25-35)

Delightful Turpin:   Delightful is Bud and Raynelle's little surprise daughter who came way behind the boys.  She is a little "slow", but always there when you need her.  (Age: 15-25)

Reverend Hooker:   The preacher the family asks to perform the services; a real on-the-air Radio Evangelist, he tries hard to do what the family wants, with various levels of success.
(Age: 25+)

Veda:   A friend and neighbor of the Turpin family, Veda is on hand to offer her support and sympathy to the family in its time of trouble.  (Age: 50+)

Norval:   Veda's husband, Norval has had a series of medical problems that make life difficult for those around him, especially Veda.  (Age: 65+)

Nadine:   A young friend and neighbor, Nadine believes every child needs to feel important.  She brings her MANY children to offer their condolences.  (Age: 30-ish)

Clyde:   Ray-Bud's redneck boss and friend, Clyde is the owner of the local garage.  He is always looking for ways to take care of his buddies and for pretty women.  (Age: 40+)

Juanita:   Cousin to the family and the mayor's wife; Juanita is one of those pretty women Clyde is on the look out for.  She is a typical politician's wife.  (Age: 30+)

The Joy of Life Singers:   Reverend Hooker's musical group that sings on-air during his radio program.  These roles will be doubled by anyone in the cast EXCEPT Ray-Bud and Junior.
