  PLACE: OYSTER MILL PLAYHOUSE
  DIRECTOR: DUANE A. BAKER

Actors Needed
The cast for LEADING LADIES includes a total of 5 men and 3 women.  A couple of these folks may double up to play some smaller roles or we may have some of the production staff play them.  This is a broad farce set in the Victorian home of Florence Snider in York, PA and surrounding areas. The action takes place in the late 1950's.  Prepare yourselves for deception, high jinks, love and even a little Shakespeare.  All of the ages listed are "playing ages," and a couple of them are even flexible depending on how the other roles are cast.

PRODUCED BY SPECIAL ARRANGEMENT WITH SAMUEL FRENCH, INC.

Director Notes

Please dress comfortably for auditions.  No need to dress for the character.  Please relax and have fun during the audition.  Auditions consist of cold readings from the script.  Everyone auditioning should also come with a brief (about 1 minute) Shakespeare soliloquy prepared.  Actors playing Leo and Jack should be fairly adept.  During the show, most of the rest of the cast will be in rehearsal for a production of Twelfth Night and will need to show varying degrees of ability.  (A few scenes will be available at the audition, but it is best to come prepared.)  Click here for examples.

Accents...  The men auditioning for Leo and Jack need to have British accents.  All the rest need to have central Pennsylvania accents (tough, I know).  I know accents can be a struggle, but please give both the old college try.  One may be better at it than one thinks.  If not, at least it's good for a laugh.

Show Descriptions

When Leo and Jack, two D-list English actors, are stranded without a penny or prospects after a calamitous performance of "Scenes from Shakespeare" at the Shrewsbury Moose Lodge, they concoct a scheme to "inherit" the fortune of an old lady in York, PA ... by impersonating her long-lost nephews, Max and Steve.  A topsy-turvy, side-splitting roller coaster of a romantic romp by one of Pennsylvania's most loved playwrights.

Character Descriptions
Meg Snider:  Local girl, vivacious, warm, great sense of humor.  Has unfulfilled dreams of the great big world outside of central Pennsylvania she has yet to experience.  (Age: Early 30's)

Duncan Wooley:  Local minister, engaged to Meg.  A good man, but fussy, headstrong, egocentric.  (Age: Early 40's)

Doc Myers:  Local doctor, Chief Moose, likeable curmudgeon, boisterous, stocky, father to Butch.
(Age: Mid 50's)

Leo Clark:  A clean shaven, Shakespeare actor from England (yes, English accent required), marginally gifted, charming yet mildly pompous, prone to temper tantrums, longs to achieve stardom...
(Age: Early 40's)

Jack Gable:  A clean shaven, Shakespeare actor from England (yes, English accent required), Leo's partner, easily dragged into Leo's harebrained schemes (think Ethel to Leo's Lucy), nice guy, longs to settle down...  (Age: Late 30's to Early 40's)

Audrey:  A well built, extremely sweet and good-natured, an "intelligent airhead." Audrey roller-skates.  The director would most likely be really impressed if auditioners showed up with their own roller skates prepared to dazzle.  (Age: 20)

Butch Myers:  A little slow on the uptake, built like he played high school football, sincere, good-hearted.  (Age: Early 20's)

Florence Snider:  An extremely crusty, terrible eyesight, wealthy, wily, ailing... or hypochondriac?
(Age: 60+)
